When Clémence de Grandval wrote to her mentor and friend Camille Saint-Saëns that she had "committed no crime other than being a woman", she had already fully established herself in the musical life of her time. A leading figure of French romanticism, she was an admired composer whose works were performed on major stages and honoured by the Académie des beaux-arts. Her music embraces every kind of ensemble, from chamber music to opera. Bringing together more than 100 artists, this portrait in four CDs offers a wide-ranging survey of her work, from the overwhelming Stabat Mater to the intimacy of her chamber pieces and songs.
